Clearly the Potter was a master of his craft. A highly unusual statement piece.
It is from the mid-19th century and is a classic boasting lovely texture, colorful yellow and green glazes, and handmade handles.
In 18th and 19th century French households, especially in Provence, these earthenware jars were essential for preserving meats like duck or goose confit in rendered fat. Once cooked and placed inside, the meat was sealed under a thick layer of fat. The pot’s design reflects its use: sunny mustard yellow and green glazes brighten the exterior, while the unglazed bottom allowed it to be partially buried underground to protect against moisture and pests.
Two sturdy, undamaged hand-thrown handles near the rim, fondly called “ears,” made lifting or lowering the heavy vessel easy.
The pot is 11" tall x 11.5" wide (handle to handle) with a 6" opening with a 10" inch deep bowl. Our Confit pots will be double boxed and packed with the utmost care for safe transit. See less
