The upper section features a traditional tambour mechanism that opens to reveal a beautifully organised writing interior. A rich green leather writing surface provides an elegant and practical workspace, complemented by numerous pigeonholes and compartments designed for organising correspondence, documents and stationery. A raised gallery crowns the desk, adding further architectural presence and completing its imposing silhouette. The substantial lower section provides exceptional storage, incorporating nine drawers in total, with four positioned to either side and a further central drawer. This extensive arrangement offers ample space for documents, stationery and personal effects. A double-door cupboard is positioned centrally within the base and opens to reveal a single internal shelf, providing additional concealed storage and making the desk particularly practical. The oak is especially attractive, displaying pronounced natural grain and appealing figuring throughout. Rich, warm colour and a mature patina developed through generations of age and use give the timber considerable depth and authentic period character. The combination of the roll-away tambour mechanism, fitted writing interior and extensive lower storage reflects the highly functional approach associated with traditional banker's and professional office furniture of the period. Substantially constructed and presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 19th-century origin. At 138 cm wide, this is an impressive and highly unusual desk with considerable architectural presence. Its combination of ingenious concealed workspace, extensive storage and handsome oak construction makes it particularly suited to a library, study, executive office or distinguished period interior.
