A factory wall clock by aeg from the 1960s in its original hammered grey paint, with a light dial, bold black bar markers, black hands and a red second hand.
aeg, the allgemeine elektricitäts-gesellschaft, grew out of emil rathenau's deutsche edison-gesellschaft, founded in berlin in 1883. In 1907 it appointed the architect and designer peter behrens as artistic adviser, giving german industry one of its first coordinated corporate designs. The plain, legible style that followed shaped factories and offices for decades. Clocks of this kind hung in workshops, corridors, offices and canteens, where the time had to be read at a glance. This example follows that tradition but is not a behrens original.
the movement has been converted to quartz and runs on a single battery, so no mains connection is needed. The dial is marked aeg and is covered by glass.
the hammered grey paint is original and shows the small marks of age. This clock is one of three of the same type; each differs slightly in finish and patina.
the clock measures 28 cm in diameter and 6 cm in thickness.
suited to collectors of german industrial design and to interiors that call for a wall clock with an honest, aged finish. This piece has an attribution mark,
