On offer is a carved wood, painted and gilt figure of an angel. This piece would almost certainly have come from a Catholic church, chapel, or private family altar. Given its size, at 13.25 inches tall, and considering its flat, more roughly worked backside, this was not a freestanding devotional statue. Instead, it was an architectural component integrated into a larger structure, such as an altarpiece where it would be flanking a central saint or tabernacle. It may also have served as a decorative element along the cornice of a church organ or choir stall.
MISSING PIECES: The square mortise cuts, structural wooden blocks, and metal pins/dowels visible on the upper back are classic mountings designed to anchor separate, carved wooden wings. The deep, central hole at the top of the head originally held a metal pin or tang. This would secure a separate, gilded metal attribute—most likely a halo or a small, radiating crown.
STYLE: While it shares characteristics found across Southern Europe during the Baroque and Rococo periods, a Spanish, Portuguese or Colonial Latin American origin is highly probable, though an Italian origin remains a possibility. The figure relies heavily on polychrome painting and estofado—a technique where gold leaf is applied over a gesso ground, painted over and then delicately scratched or patterned to reveal the gold underneath, simulating rich textiles.
While utilized in Italy, this technique reached its zenith and was ubiquitously used across Spain and the Iberian colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries. The heavily stylized, round face, dark defined eyebrows, heavily lined eyelids and small red mouth are very characteristic of Spanish and Spanish-Colonial (such as Guatemalan, Mexican, or Andean) workshop traditions from the 1700s.
Mount it on a wall bracket lit with a pinspot light. This angel has heard a lot of prayers over the centuries. Perhaps yours?
