The chair has an impressive architectural appearance, dominated by its tall carved back with bold scrolling ornament, shaped cresting and a distinctive central applied motif. Slender turned supports flank the back and complement the substantial barley twist front legs, creating a particularly attractive and sculptural silhouette. The solid wooden seat sits above a shaped apron with further carved detailing, while the rich oak has developed a wonderfully deep colour and authentic aged patina through generations of use. Its combination of elaborate carving, unusual proportions and dark period finish gives the chair tremendous character. It would make an excellent statement hall chair, occasional chair or decorative accent within a country house, library, study, entrance hall or traditional interior. The chair remains structurally solid overall, although there is a slight degree of movement or wobble consistent with its age. Historic splits, scratches, surface marks, rubbing and other imperfections are present throughout and contribute to its genuine antique appearance. A wonderfully atmospheric example of late 19th-century revival furniture with excellent decorative presence.
