The sloping writing surface is inset with red leather and framed by a delicate brass gallery, creating a sophisticated contrast against the deep ebonised finish. The writing slope lifts to reveal a generously proportioned internal compartment, providing practical storage for documents, correspondence and writing accessories. The desk incorporates four functional drawers accompanied by four corresponding faux drawers, preserving the balanced architectural appearance traditionally associated with Davenport desks. The drawers retain their original knob handles. Decorative gilt detailing throughout provides further visual interest and lends the desk a particularly elegant character without detracting from its compact proportions. Raised upon turned feet fitted with castors, the desk can be repositioned relatively easily while retaining a graceful and substantial appearance. Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use consistent with its 19th-century origin. A highly decorative yet practical example of Victorian writing furniture, ideally suited to a study, library, drawing room or sophisticated contemporary interior.
