The table features a restrained and well-balanced Georgian design, with a single drawer positioned to the front providing useful storage for stationery, correspondence and smaller personal items. The drawer retains its original decorative brass handles and fittings, contributing greatly to the authentic period character of the piece. A particularly appealing feature is the hinged drop leaf positioned to the rear. When closed, the table has a relatively compact depth of just 46 cm, allowing it to sit comfortably against a wall or within a smaller space. When required, the leaf can be raised to increase the overall depth to approximately 90.5 cm, creating a substantially larger and highly practical working surface. This adaptable construction makes the table particularly useful as both an elegant occasional piece and a functional writing desk. The table is raised upon simple square legs, giving the piece a clean and understated silhouette characteristic of refined Georgian furniture. The restrained construction allows the quality of the mahogany and the elegant proportions to remain the principal decorative features. Throughout, the mahogany displays a particularly attractive natural grain with a deep, rich colour and established patina, reflecting its considerable age and enhancing the table's historic character. At 102 cm wide, the table provides a generous writing surface while retaining highly manageable proportions. The 56 cm knee clearance allows it to function comfortably as a seated writing table. Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 18th-century origin. A highly desirable and unusually versatile example of Georgian furniture, combining beautifully aged mahogany, original brass hardware, practical drawer storage and an ingenious extending drop-leaf writing surface.
