This vintage gilt carved grotto tête-à-tête presents a theatrical, sculptural silhouette, with two shallow, shell-form seats set in opposing directions and joined at the center in a graceful S-curve. Carved from wood, each seat is sculpted in the manner of a scallop shell, with deep, radiating flutes that fan outward from a central hinge and finish in a rippled, scalloped edge. A small shell-shaped back rises behind each sitter, while a continuous, sinuous rail finished in faux bamboo, with carved nodes and segments, loops around the form and ends in scrolled, dolphin-like arm terminals. Four carved legs in a rugged, bark-like, faux-bois texture are accented with gilded shell and leaf motifs that curl down the front of each leg. The surface pairs a deep, inky black-brown ground with warm, burnished gold, and the gilding has softened over time, with rubbed highlights and glimpses of dark underlayers adding depth and age. Whimsical, romantic, and distinctly Venetian in spirit, the piece reads as a sculptural fantasy of the sea in carved and gilded form.
Place this tête-à-tête in an entry hall, at the foot of a bed, in a dressing room, or beneath a large mirror, where it can serve as both intimate seating and a striking sculptural accent. It complements Hollywood Regency, Baroque, Italian, Grandmillennial, and Coastal Glam interiors. To care for it, dust gently with a soft dry brush, avoid water and chemical cleaners, and keep it away from direct sunlight, radiators, and humidity to protect the gilding. The piece measures 47.5 inches (1207 mm) wide, 17 inches (432 mm) deep, and 27.25 inches (692 mm) high. Condition is good, with a worn original finish, a rich patina, surface scratches and scuffs on the legs and seat, and no visible repairs, and it remains structurally sound.
