This vintage Venetian gilt carved grotto bench presents a theatrical, sculptural silhouette, with three sweeping scallop-shell seat backs that fan upward in a rhythmic, overlapping crest. Carved from wood, each shell is finished in a soft, burnished silver-leaf tone with fine radiating flutes, while hints of deep oxblood red glow in the crevices between the shells. The seats curl forward into scrolled, shell-like lips, and the arms rise in sinuous, serpentine curves, their scaled bodies and bamboo-like segments finished in warm gold. At either end, a carved sea-horse figure with a finely modeled head and finned neck anchors the composition, its body coiling into a swirling, wave-like base. A long, scaled, tail-like stretcher spans the bottom, with a small silver shell and leafy coral-like sprays suspended beneath the seats for a grotto-inspired flourish. The original finish has mellowed into a rich patina, with gilded highlights, softly rubbed edges, and glimpses of the wood beneath adding depth and age. Opulent, whimsical, and unmistakably Venetian, the bench reads as a sculptural fantasy of the sea in carved and gilded form.
Place this bench in an entry hall, along a gallery wall, at the foot of a bed, in a dining room, or beneath a large mirror, where it can serve as both seating and a striking sculptural statement. It complements Hollywood Regency, Italian, Baroque, Grandmillennial, and Coastal Glam interiors. To care for it, dust gently with a soft dry brush, avoid water and chemical cleaners, and keep it away from direct sunlight, radiators, and humidity to protect the gilding. The bench measures 64 inches (1626 mm) wide, 16.5 inches (419 mm) deep, and 43.5 inches (1105 mm) high, with a seat height of 19.25 inches (489 mm). Condition is very good, with a rich original patina, minor surface wear and scuffs on the arms and seat edges, and no visible repairs or losses. Make this extraordinary piece yours today.
