An exceptional example of early 20th-century American art porcelain, this elegantly formed antique tray is distinguished by its magnificent hand-painted floral composition, extensive gold gilding, and original “Osborne” signature incorporated directly into the decoration. Associated with Chicago's celebrated Osborne Art Studio, established by Asbjorn T. Olsen, professionally known as Osborne, the piece embodies the artistic refinement and accomplished craftsmanship of America's distinguished china-painting tradition during the Art Nouveau period.
The composition presents a dramatic arrangement of poppies rendered in saturated crimson, scarlet, deep burgundy, and delicate blush pink. Each blossom displays accomplished individual brushwork, with beautifully feathered petals, nuanced tonal transitions, and intricately articulated centers in green, black, and subtle pale accents. Exceptionally slender green stems extend gracefully across the warm ivory porcelain ground, accompanied by delicate daisy-like blossoms and finely rendered botanical details. Rather than arranging the flowers in a conventional centered bouquet, the artist concentrates the richly painted poppies at one end of the tray, allowing an expansive ivory field to create a sophisticated interplay of color, movement, and negative space. The resulting composition possesses an unusually modern sensibility while retaining the romantic naturalism characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement.
Extensive hand-applied gold gilding surrounds the floral decoration, incorporating elaborate scrolling foliate ornamentation, sweeping curvilinear motifs, and richly embellished borders. Broad passages of gold follow the sculptural contours of the porcelain, extending across the substantial integral pierced handles and elegantly shaped ends. The contrast between the luminous gilt surfaces, saturated floral painting, and warm ivory ground creates an exceptionally sumptuous decorative effect.
The beautifully modeled oval porcelain body features a generously recessed central well, dramatically shaped ends, and two integral pierced handles. Its approximately 2 1/2-inch overall depth gives the piece a substantial sculptural presence beyond that of a conventional cabinet plate. The relationship between its architectural porcelain form and elaborate painted and gilded decoration is particularly distinctive.
Of considerable importance is the original hand-painted “Osborne” signature, discreetly incorporated directly into the floral composition beside the poppies and beneath the surrounding gilt ornamentation. This placement is consistent with documented early Osborne signing practices, when decorated porcelain was sometimes signed on the painted surface rather than permanently marked on the underside. The signature remains an important identifying feature of this example.
Born in Chicago to Norwegian parents, Asbjorn T. Olsen was professionally decorating porcelain by the opening years of the 20th century and established Osborne Art Studio around 1910. The studio became recognized for its accomplished hand-painted porcelain and elaborate gilding, remaining in operation until 1973. Osborne Art Studio utilized undecorated porcelain blanks, including examples imported from European manufacturers, which were subsequently decorated and fired in Chicago. The original manufacturer of this particular porcelain blank remains unidentified.
Unlike the later gold-overlay decorative wares frequently associated with Osborne Art Studio, this early example places the artistry of the floral painting at the forefront. Its combination of expressive botanical decoration, extensive gilding, sophisticated asymmetrical composition, and original hand-painted signature distinguishes it as a particularly compelling example of early American decorative art.
An elegant and visually commanding work, equally suited to a distinguished collection of American art porcelain or displayed as an exceptional decorative centerpiece within an Art Nouveau, traditional, or sophisticated contemporary interior.

The porcelain body presents attractively, with no obvious chips, structural cracks, broken sections, or repairs apparent in the supplied photographs. Both integral pierced handles appear complete and intact, retaining their original sculptural contours and decorative ornamentation. The generously recessed central well, elegantly shaped ends, and raised borders remain well defined, preserving the integrity of the original porcelain form. The hand-painted floral composition retains remarkable richness of color and clarity of detail. The crimson, scarlet, burgundy, and blush-pink poppies remain beautifully articulated, with their delicate feathered shading, subtle gradations of pigment, and finely rendered centers clearly visible. The elongated green stems and smaller blossoms likewise retain their original decorative character. Minor surface irregularities and fine lines are visible within portions of the painted decoration, particularly around overlapping petals and darker areas of pigmentation. These have not been identified as structural porcelain cracks. The extensive gold gilding exhibits scattered age-appropriate wear, particularly along the exposed outer borders, raised edges, and pierced handle areas. Close examination reveals fine surface scratches, localized thinning of the gold finish, minor abrasions, and small areas of diminished gilding. Certain passages of the scrolling foliate decoration display subtle variations in tone and reflectivity, together with softened details consistent with more than a century of age and careful handling. The majority of the decorative gold surface remains present, contributing significantly to the tray's overall richness and visual appeal. The warm ivory porcelain ground remains attractive, with minor surface marks and subtle evidence of age and handling. The recessed central well retains its smooth glazed appearance, while the outer perimeter displays the natural surface wear associated with an antique decorative object of this period. The original hand-painted “Osborne” signature remains clearly visible within the floral composition. No obvious evidence of regilding, overpainting, or restoration is apparent from the photographs, although previous conservation cannot be definitively excluded without physical examination. The underside retains its glazed porcelain surface without an identifiable surviving manufacturer's backstamp. The absence of a permanent underside mark is consistent with documented signing practices associated with certain early Osborne-decorated pieces. Overall, an exceptionally attractive example displaying beautifully preserved floral painting, substantial surviving gilding, and honest, age-appropriate surface wear. The natural characteristics of age have been retained, preserving the historical integrity and decorative appeal of this distinguished antique porcelain tray. Please examine all photographs carefully, including the detailed views of the floral painting, gold decoration, integral pierced handles, underside, and original Osborne signature, as they form an important part of the condition description. less
