art deco spelter
in the past, spelter has often been overlooked by art dealers in preference to bronze. However, pieces of spelter, dating from the early twentieth century to the present day, are now much sought after. The beauty of its finished patina – when spelter is cast it is produced without flaws – creates sculptural works that are perfect in form. The quality of spelter is in its casting. After casting the body of the work it can be painted or gilded. This exact science of production has pushed spelter to be as collectable as bronze because of the higher quality of finish.

the base of the piece itself, is made of a polished stone, (possibly travertine.) the two deer, stand on a secondary, white, polished marble surface that has beautiful, pink and charcoal grey veining, that extends just below the right, left and back edges of the piece. The front or "face" of the piece, showcases a sleek, streamlined design made of rectangular pieces, of what appears to be polished black onyx and alabaster.

base has a small chip at the lower left corner, and tiny chip at the right hand corner (see photos next to 1 centime coin for perspective), but nothing that takes away from its beauty.

piece is overall, very good, original, vintage condition with light marks, signs of usage and age, as well as patina of time on the two deer, marble surfaces, face and base, all commensurate with time (see photos.)

this piece has only been gently cleaned, in order to preserve and respect the original, natural, beautiful patina of time.

piece is solid, stable and heavy.
