Finches gather among chrysanthemums, autumn grasses and flowering shrubs on a globular ivory-white body, painted with the fine, feathery brushwork that distinguished Meiji export porcelain.

The tall, slender neck is dressed in Kutani’s signature iron-red and gold, with a brocade pattern, hexagonal tortoiseshell bands, crests and stylized clouds. A petal-panel band frame the body, and the gilded stopper repeats the iron-red palette.

At 14 inches, it has the height and silhouette to anchor a shelf, mantel or console, and the warm persimmon tones pair easily with wood, brass and neutral interiors.

JUNE'S THOUGHTS
I keep coming back to the three little birds on the front, two of them practically nose to nose while the third looks on like a chaperone. Someone painted every single feather on those wings by hand over a hundred years ago, and that just gets me. It’s the kind of piece you notice something new in every time you walk past.

NOTE: The iron-red under-base seal, Watano Sei (綿埜製), translates as “Made by Watano.”
