The upper section is beautifully arranged around a central lockable cupboard, its doors displaying particularly striking burr walnut figuring. The cupboard opens to reveal a small internal shelf, providing discreet storage while retaining the elegant symmetry of the design. Flanking the cupboard are two smaller drawers, while two generously proportioned drawers are positioned centrally beneath. The drawers retain their original decorative brass handles, which complement the warm tones and richly figured surfaces of the walnut. The extensive burr walnut used across the cupboard doors and drawer fronts is particularly attractive, displaying dramatic natural figuring that gives the piece considerable decorative presence. Carved details and carefully executed flourishes throughout further demonstrate the quality of the French cabinetmaking. The writing surface provides a practical workspace beneath the superstructure, while the table is supported upon finely turned legs that give the substantial composition a graceful and balanced appearance.
