The pair comprises an elegantly dressed male and female figure in romanticised 18th-century costume, each standing beside a tall naturalistically modelled support terminating in a candle socket. The figures carry baskets and are beautifully rendered with expressive faces, finely detailed clothing and delicate hand-painted decoration. Particularly impressive are the elaborate bases, lavishly encrusted with individually modelled porcelain flowers, leaves and scrolling Rococo ornament. Soft shades of turquoise, pink, blue, green and ivory are complemented by subtle painted and gilt details, creating the colourful yet refined appearance characteristic of Sitzendorf decorative porcelain. Designed as functional candlesticks as well as ornamental sculptures, the pair has considerable presence despite their relatively elegant proportions. The male and female figures form a particularly attractive companion set and display beautifully together. The bases are marked and exhibit the modelling, applied floral decoration and colourful palette traditionally associated with the Sitzendorf Porcelain Manufactory of Thuringia, Germany.
