The composition is sensitively modelled, with considerable attention given to the figure's facial features, clothing, drapery and natural posture. The child is carefully incorporated into the composition, creating an intimate maternal subject with a strong narrative quality. Finely cast in bronze, the sculpture demonstrates accomplished workmanship throughout. Detailed surface modelling gives definition to the folds of the clothing and individual features while creating a convincing sense of movement and presence. The bronze has developed a rich, deep patina through age, with subtle variations in tone accentuating the sculptural details and contributing to the historic character of the work. Substantial in both weight and visual presence, the sculpture is presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use consistent with its 19th-century origin. An impressive example of 19th-century European figurative bronze work, combining accomplished modelling with an engaging maternal subject. Ideally suited to display upon a pedestal, console, library table or within a collection of historic sculpture and decorative arts. Dimensions: Height: 36 cm Width: 27 cm Depth: 23.5 cm See less
