The compact box is distinguished by its finely worked niello ornamentation, a decorative technique in which engraved areas of silver are filled with a dark metallic compound to create sharply contrasting patterns. Against the warm silver-gilt ground, the dark niello work produces a particularly striking and sophisticated effect. Russian silversmiths became internationally renowned for their mastery of niello during the 19th century, using the technique to decorate boxes, cigarette cases, spoons and other luxury personal objects. The precision of the decoration transforms this functional snuff box into an appealing miniature work of decorative art. Originally intended for carrying finely ground tobacco, the box now has particular appeal as a collectible example of Imperial Russian silver. Its combination of solid silver construction, gilding, niello work and documented 1871 Moscow date makes it especially attractive for a collection of Russian decorative arts, antique boxes or 19th-century silver.
