The lamp is distinguished by its dramatic horizontal form, with elongated wing-like arms extending from the central oil reservoir and terminating in stylised zoomorphic finials reminiscent of makara or bird heads. The central bowl is enriched with concentric detailing and supported upon a beautifully proportioned stepped and tiered pedestal base. A particularly characteristic feature of the Changalavatta form is its suspended chain, or changala. This example retains its spoon-form oil feeder, traditionally used to replenish the reservoir during use. The combination of the extended arms, central vessel and hanging chain creates a sculptural and immediately recognisable silhouette. Finely cast in metal, the surface displays a rich and naturally developed patina acquired through considerable age and use, giving the lamp exceptional depth and character. Oil lamps of this type formed an important part of ceremonial, domestic and temple traditions in Kerala, where the illumination of a flame carries associations with light, purity and the dispelling of darkness. The survival of the distinctive chain and feeder element adds considerably to the decorative character of this example. with its sculptural proportions, aged surface and strong regional identity, it makes an impressive addition to a collection of Indian decorative arts, ritual objects or historic metalwork.
