A fine early 20th-century sterling silver cake compotier, tazza or bon bon dish by William Aitken, fully hallmarked in Birmingham for 1904. Of elegant circular form and raised upon a pedestal stem, the piece combines classical proportions with a beautifully shaped gadrooned border. ㅤ The broad circular dish is framed by an elegant serpentine rim, its gently undulating outline enriched with traditional gadrooned decoration. The alternating curves and raised detailing create an attractive play of light across the highly polished sterling silver surface. ㅤ The central field remains deliberately restrained, allowing the elegant silhouette and quality of the silver craftsmanship to take precedence over excessive ornamentation. ㅤ The dish is elevated upon a slender pedestal stem leading to a circular flared foot, creating the graceful raised profile characteristic of traditional compotiers and tazzas. The proportioned pedestal gives the piece an architectural presence while providing a stable foundation. ㅤ Produced by William Aitken, the piece carries Birmingham hallmarks dating it precisely to 1904. Its design bridges the late Victorian and Edwardian traditions, retaining classical decorative elements while adopting the more restrained elegance fashionable during the early 20th century. ㅤ with a net sterling silver weight of 214.3 grams, the piece has a pleasing substance while maintaining an elegant and refined appearance. Its versatile proportions make it suitable for serving cakes, confectionery or bon bons or simply displayed as a decorative silver centrepiece. ㅤ The piece remains in very good antique condition, with no notable damage, bruising, splits, holes or repairs and only minor surface marks consistent with age. It remains free from later presentation inscriptions or monograms. ㅤ The sterling silver retains a beautiful bright patina and the piece is clean and ready for practical use or decorative display.
