Measuring approximately 10 inches across the base of the bell and weighing around 12kg in total, this is a genuinely commanding antique object with wonderful presence. This large antique bronze bell, dating to approximately c.1880, has a beautifully unusual textured surface, giving the bronze considerable character and visual depth. The maker or foundry is unmarked, although the form and construction suggest a european origin, with a possible belgian provenance. Further research may reveal more about its manufacture and original purpose. The bell is mounted horizontally within a substantial oak lattice-frame support, with four decorative metal finials positioned at the corners. The oak frame provides a wonderfully architectural presentation and allows the bell to be displayed securely on a table, desk, sideboard or purpose-built shelf. The original pull mechanism operates the clapper, allowing the bell to be rung while it remains horizontally mounted. It is therefore both a highly decorative object and a fully functional bell. And what a sound! the bell produces a deep, powerful and remarkably resonant tone, with an impressive lingering ring of approximately 15 seconds after being struck. Please see the accompanying photographs and video to appreciate both its appearance and extraordinary sound. Its substantial construction and commanding acoustic quality would make it equally at home as a ship’s bell, mess bell, institutional bell, college bell, servants’ bell or large estate bell. Its exact original use is uncertain, so it is offered as an intriguing antique object for further research rather than with a definitive attribution. A connoisseur’s piece the combination of the large bronze bell, unusual textured finish, heavy construction and handsome oak lattice mount makes this a particularly distinctive example. The oak support is especially attractive, with its open lattice construction providing an elegant contrast to the heavy bronze. The overall effect is wonderfully evocative of a grand victorian institution, estate, ship or maritime setting. This would make a superb statement piece for a study, library, dining room, country house, maritime collection, restaurant or period interior. Measurements oak frame: 14.75" l × 14.5" w × 14" h bell: approx. 8" h × 10" diameter at base total weight: approx. 12kg condition excellent antique condition, commensurate with age. The bronze shows the expected surface patina and signs of age associated with an object of approximately 140 years old. The oak frame is also in very good order, with no significant structural damage noted. No foundry or maker's mark has been identified. A rare and imposing antique bronze bell with exceptional presence, an unusually good sound and a wonderfully substantial oak presentation mount. A true statement piece for the discerning collector.
