Traditionally associated with Sunat, or circumcision ceremonies, chairs of this low, broad throne-like form were used ceremonially for a young Muslim boy following the rite, giving the piece important cultural as well as decorative significance. The chair is richly hand-carved throughout. Its large backrest features a striking symmetrical arrangement of opposing birds surrounded by deeply carved flowers, scrolling foliage and architectural ornament. Remnants of aged red, brown and gilt decoration remain across the surface, creating a wonderfully time-worn patina and giving the chair exceptional visual presence. The substantial lower frame continues the floral carving and terminates in four dramatic scrolling feet, reinforcing the miniature-throne appearance. Traditional hand-worked construction remains visible underneath, including old saw and tool marks, irregular joinery and other characteristics associated with genuine handmade furniture of this age. The woven cane seat appears to be a later replacement or re-caning and remains both attractive and usable. A rare and highly decorative piece of historic Indonesian furniture, ideally suited to a collector of Southeast Asian decorative arts, an eclectic interior, gallery setting or as a sculptural statement chair. Material Hand-carved wood, polychrome and gilt decoration, woven cane Measurements Height: 58 cm / 22.8 in Width: 57 cm / 22.4 in Depth: 48 cm / 18.9 in Condition Very good decorative antique condition considering its age and ceremonial use. Extensive authentic patination remains throughout, including rubbing and losses to the red and gilt decoration, scratches, marks, historic wear, minor shrinkage and irregularities associated with traditional handmade construction. The cane seat appears to have been replaced or re-caned at a later date. See less
