A refined and beautifully proportioned 18th-century Georgian mahogany writing table, combining elegant simplicity, fine cabinetmaking and practical functionality within a timeless period design. Very well made and of good quality, the table exemplifies the restrained elegance associated with Georgian furniture, with clean architectural lines and graceful proportions allowing the quality of the timber and craftsmanship to take centre stage. The table is fitted with a single practical front drawer, providing convenient storage for stationery, correspondence and writing essentials. The drawer retains its original decorative handles, preserving the authentic character and appearance of the piece. Delicate satinwood stringing borders the drawer front, creating a subtle decorative contrast against the rich mahogany. This refined detail introduces additional visual interest without detracting from the understated elegance of the overall design. Raised on four slender tapered legs, the table has a particularly light and balanced appearance characteristic of Georgian furniture. The simplicity of the supports complements the clean lines of the top and gives the piece a graceful silhouette from every angle. The beautifully selected mahogany displays exceptional natural figuring, rich warm colouring and attractive tonal variation throughout. Its matured surface and character provide the depth and visual appeal expected from a genuine piece of 18th-century furniture.
Measuring 79 cm wide and 50 cm deep, the table offers a useful writing surface while maintaining compact proportions. A knee height of 64 cm further enhances its practicality as a writing table or occasional desk. Its elegant scale also makes it particularly versatile, allowing the piece to function as a writing table in a study or library, or alternatively as a refined side or occasional table within a living space. Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 18th-century origin. A highly desirable Georgian mahogany writing table combining beautifully figured timber, delicate satinwood stringing, original decorative handles and elegant tapered legs within a sophisticated period design.
