Rare 1908 August Otto Art Nouveau Dragon Vase for Johann Maresch Austrian Pottery
Description:
An exceptionally rare and impressive 1908 Art Nouveau earthenware dragon vase designed by Austrian sculptor and designer August Otto (1868–1947) for the renowned Johann Maresch pottery manufactory.
This remarkable sculptural vase showcases the dramatic organic forms characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. The design features a tall, elegant flared neck, an intricately textured body, and a striking sculptural dragon motif that wraps around the vessel, creating an extraordinary three-dimensional composition. Its dark, richly nuanced glaze combines deep black, bronze, olive green, and earthy brown tones, emphasizing the intricate modeling and fantastical character of the design.
The vase is incised with the signature “Aug. Otto” and dated 1908. The underside bears the impressed “JM” mark for Johann Maresch, along with the model number 1676.
August Otto’s sculptural designs for Johann Maresch are highly sought after by collectors of antique European ceramics, Art Nouveau decorative arts, and exceptional early 20th-century figural pottery. Comparable works have appeared at distinguished auction houses, including Christie’s.
A striking and highly collectible example of early 20th-century Austrian Art Nouveau design, this rare dragon vase would make an impressive centerpiece in a serious collection of European ceramics or an elegant statement in a sophisticated interior.
