This beautiful piece is an authentic Victorian shell cameo configured to function as both a brooch pin and a pendant. It dates to the Late Victorian Era, circa 1870–1900. The profile depicts a Bacchante, a mythological female follower of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, fertility and revelry. She is identified by the grapevine leaves and clusters of grapes woven into her hair. Bacchante imagery was incredibly popular in the 19th century, symbolizing celebration, joy and a romanticized appreciation for classical antiquity.
STYLE: Wearing cameos reached its absolute peak during the mid-to-late 19th century. Queen Victoria herself was famously fond of them, which sparked a massive trend across the Western world. In its day, a large piece like this, measuring 2.5 inches tall, was typically pinned centrally at the throat of a high-collared dress or used to secure a lace shawl or scarf. The fold-down bail at the top allowed it to optionally switch to a pendant hung from a thick gold chain or velvet ribbon.
MATERIALS: This piece is hand-carved from natural marine shell, likely a Cassis madagascariensis or Emperor helmet shell. The carver utilized the natural color gradations of the shell, keeping the rich, warm brownish-orange background layer while carving the intricate, high-relief figure from the ivory-white inner layer. The decorative octagonal wirework setting is typical of Victorian design.
CREATION: The shell itself was almost certainly carved in Italy, specifically in the region around Naples and Torre del Greco, which was the global epicenter of cameo carving. Once completed, loose cameos were then exported across Europe and North America, where local jewelers would set them into gold mountings.
TODAY: Wear it for celebrations, inspired by the follower of Bacchus depicted in the carving. Pin it to the lapel of a tailored blazer, likewise a denim jacket. Or suspend it on a contemporary chain necklace as a bold statement piece…certainly it's an intriguing conversation starter.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent. Presentation box dimensions: 1.5 inches high x 2.75 inches wide x 4 inches deep.
