The dense, fine-grained stone displays an earthy olive-grey body traversed by prominent reddish-brown iron oxide banding, irregular rust-toned patches, and warm ochre striations encircling its midsection. Traditionally gathered from sacred waterways, most notably the Narmada River in central India, these stones represent the aniconic form of the Hindu deity Shiva.

Within regional devotional and domestic traditions, they frequently served as sacred fertility objects and protective talismans for newly married couples, traditionally anointed with milk, water, or fragrant oils during daily puja and life-cycle rituals. The egg-shaped stone rests securely within an ornate cast brass tripod stand, allowing it to be exhibited vertically as a freestanding sculpture. Three stylized zoomorphic legs—cast with curving scrollwork and clawed feet reminiscent of mythical makaras—branch out from a central ring collar, leaving the stone unpierced and removable for handling.

Dating to the mid-to-late 19th century, circa 1840–1880, the piece survives in sound antique condition with gentle handling wear. Light surface scuffs, small natural mineral pits, and minor verdigris around the brass mounting points are consistent with devotional use and age. The stone measures approximately 20 cm in length, reaching an overall height of roughly 24.5 cm when displayed on the stand. See less
