Each interlocking shaped wing features a central crowned Hindu deity surrounded by dense scrolling foliage, leaf sprays, and blossom borders. The figures are rendered in bold relief with detailed tiered headdresses and layered garments, set within architectural arches against a cut-out background that gives the piece an airy, lace-like appearance. Constructed as a practical dress fastening, the buckle separates into two symmetrical halves connected by a rear sliding tab-and-slot mechanism. Heavy vertical wire loops are soldered across the reverse of both panels, intended to secure a pleated ribbon, canvas, or grosgrain sash worn as part of a nursing or day uniform. Fabricated from unmarked white metal, typical of regional Indian metalwork of varying silver purities, the piece remains in honest, uncleaned condition. Deep natural tarnish lingers within the stippled grounds and chased recesses, contrasting effectively with the softer highlights on the raised relief. The metal shows gentle surface handling marks, but no structural splits or repairs to the pierced fretwork. Such items gained wide appeal in the British Raj era, as Indian metalworkers adapted sacred iconography and traditional repoussé techniques into functional accessories for Western dress. This example was probably produced between 1910 and 1935. When closed, the buckle measures approximately 78 mm in total width and 52 mm in maximum height, with belt loops accommodating ribbons up to 40 mm wide. See less
