Measuring 18 inches long and 14.25 inches high, this ceramic rooster is both a functional covered serving vessel and a striking sculptural centerpiece.

The richly detailed feathers are painted in layered shades of charcoal gray, soft olive green, yellow, and ivory, with a brilliant red comb and wattles, golden beak, and expressive eyes. A dramatically sculpted tail completes the lifelike form, while the fitted lid lifts away to reveal a generous glazed interior. The original white ceramic serving ladle is included and rests in a specially designed opening near the tail.

Made in Italy during the late 20th century, circa 1970s–1980s, this substantial piece of decorative majolica brings character to a dining room, kitchen island, farmhouse table, or country-style sideboard.

JUNE'S THOUGHTS
Some pieces simply make you smile, and this impressive rooster is certainly one of them. I especially admire the painter's attention to the individual feathers.

At nearly a foot and a half long, he has the presence to command a farmhouse dining table or kitchen island without needing anything around him. And while he was designed as a soup tureen, I think his greatest appeal today is as a decorative centerpiece.
