Originally designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1930 for Villa Tugendhat in Brno, the chair combines a geometric upholstered seat with an exposed metal structure.

According to the original owner, these chairs were manufactured by Knoll. Neither retains its original manufacturer’s label.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect and furniture designer whose work helped define modernist design. His architecture and furniture emphasize clear structure, restrained forms, and carefully considered proportions. He taught at the Bauhaus and the Illinois Institute of Technology and served as a mentor to Florence Knoll.

Founded by Hans Knoll in 1938, Knoll became a leading producer of modern furniture. Florence Knoll helped shape the company’s approach to furniture and interior planning. Its collection includes designs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, and Florence Knoll. See less
