A charming pair of Italian bombe commodini featuring richly figured wood veneers and intricate geometric marquetry. Dating to the mid-20th century, these diminutive bedside chests draw inspiration from 18th-century Italian Rococo furniture, combining traditional craftsmanship with playful proportions.
Each features a gently shaped top, two curved drawers, and elegant cabriole legs. Contrasting wood veneers, including walnut and possibly olivewood, are arranged in an intersecting lattice pattern across the tops, sides, and drawer fronts. The warm honey and amber tones highlight the natural figuring of the wood, while decorative brass drawer pulls provide a handsome finishing detail.
Particularly appealing are the exaggerated curves of the bombe fronts, scalloped aprons, and slender legs, which lend the pair a lightness despite their richly patterned surfaces.
Their compact proportions make them especially versatile as bedside tables, flanking a sofa, or positioned individually as occasional chests.
An original paper label beneath one commodino reads "Mr. Corner Shop, New York, Art. 547, Ord. NY/4012, Made in Italy," documenting their Italian manufacture and association with a New York retailer.
Offered as a pair.
Each table measures 28.33" tall. At the widest point across the bombe drawer, the measurement is 15" deep x 22" wide while the tabletop is 13.5" deep x 20.75" wide.
Good vintage condition consistent with age and use. The wood surfaces retain a warm patina with scattered scratches, minor abrasions, small veneer imperfections, and areas of finish wear throughout. One commodino has old vertical surface scratches across the top, as shown in the photographs. Some age-related separation and minor irregularities are visible along veneer seams and edges. The brass hardware exhibits natural patina and oxidation. Both commodini present beautifully with wear appropriate to their age. Price reflects condition.
