A refined late Victorian gentleman’s dress cane dating to circa 1885–1900, featuring an extensively engraved gold-filled or rolled-gold pommel mounted … Read more A refined late Victorian gentleman’s dress cane dating to circa 1885–1900, featuring an extensively engraved gold-filled or rolled-gold pommel mounted on an elegant ebonised hardwood shaft. ㅤ The pommel is richly decorated with intricate Rococo Revival scrollwork and foliate motifs, creating an elaborate surface of polished ornament contrasted against densely engraved darker grounds. ㅤ The decoration extends around the full handle, demonstrating particularly detailed workmanship, while the crown has been left comparatively smooth to provide a restrained contrast to the elaborate engraving below. ㅤ A tiny pair of initials, apparently “JL”, is discreetly incorporated into the lower engraved decoration. These may relate to a maker or engraver, although their precise significance is unknown. ㅤ Gold-filled pommel canes of this character were fashionable gentleman’s accessories during the late 19th century, combining decorative metalwork with the understated appearance of a black ebonised shaft. ㅤ Presented in good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its age and use.
