Dating precisely to the peak artistic era directed by chemist Cadmon Robertson (circa 1904–1914), this piece features the pottery’s remarkably scarce, experimental gunmetal metallic glaze. Designed to compete with prestigious European iridescents, the high-gloss metallic finish creates an "oil slick" play-of-light, shifting elegantly between charcoal black and deep midnight blue tones.

The underside of the vessel is remarkably well-documented. It features cleanly incised factory shape numbers 134 and 173, a handwritten blue glaze formula annotation, and a crisp, perfectly legible "M inside a circle" monogram mark. This monogram was utilized by Robertson as a tribute to his wife, Emoretta Taft, and serves to definitively date this experimental piece to the factory's golden era. A rare, historically significant accent piece for Mission, Arts & Crafts, or modern organic interiors.
