A rare and exceptionally charming pair of period French Directoire side chairs, dating from the late 18th century (circa 1795–1800). These chairs perfectly capture the transitional elegance of the Neoclassical movement following the French Revolution, balancing restrained geometric lines with delicate classical iconography.
Backrest Design: The open backrest showcases a beautifully carved, stylized Greco-Roman urn centerpiece framed by an open diamond-shaped outline and horizontal splats.
The beechwood frames feature their historic, highly desirable chalk-white and sage green distressed polychrome paint. The natural crackle and wear offer an authentic, unaltered patina that only centuries can produce.
The chairs sit on classic, slender ring-turned tapered front legs terminating in small toupie feet, with gently splayed square sabre legs in the rear for architectural stability.
Professionally updated in a rich, vibrant teal-blue velvet. The tight seats are neatly finished with a meticulous border of hand-applied antiqued brass nailhead trim.
Excellent antique condition relative to age and use.
Structurally sound, tight joints, and highly stable for everyday decorative or light seating use.

The painted surface shows expected historic wear, minor chipping, and flaking consistent with a late 18th-century piece, enhancing its authentic character.
