At an impressive … Read more A wonderfully whimsical vintage Santa Claus from the 1990s, handcrafted in the American country folk art tradition. At an impressive 27 inches long, this soft-bodied Santa wears a red felt jacket hand-appliquéd with two winter scenes.

On one side, a moose carries a wrapped gift past calico and gingham evergreens; on the other, a snow-covered log cabin sits among the pines. Blanket stitching, embroidered snowflakes, wooden star and crescent moon buttons, and brass-tone jingle bells with cord-loop closures finish the jacket.

Santa has a soft muslin face with painted blue eyes, a full curly wool-yarn beard, and a long red stocking cap with a holly sprig and a bell at its tip. He wears tartan plaid trousers gathered at the ankle, oversized black boots with fleece cuffs and yarn laces, and navy felt mittens embroidered with snowflakes. The mittens slip off, and the jacket opens to show a cream waffle-knit shirt with a button placket.

He is made to sit. He looks especially charming on a bench, a deep mantel or a stack of vintage trunks, or with a collection of vintage Christmas decorations.
