This exceptional Louis XVI style mantel clock set comprises a striking central clock and a pair of matching candlesticks. The centerpiece features an imposing patinated bronze globe depicting the celestial vault, embellished with stars and applied Roman numerals in gilt bronze.
This globe is gracefully held aloft by a group of cherubs in finely chased bronze with a brilliant gilt finish. The entire piece rises on a cylindrical shaft of veined white marble, sumptuously adorned with garlands of flowers and tied ribbons, before resting on a molded base supported by toupie feet. Perfectly echoing the clock, each candlestick features a draped putto raising a cup in the form of a candle holder. These two figures also rest on shafts and bases of white marble, finely decorated with festoons, floral garlands, and gilt beads. The combination of white marble, the brown patina of the globe, and the gleam of the gilded bronzes offers a striking contrast, a testament to the great refinement of French decorative arts.
The delicate bronze work, the originality of the celestial globe, and the nobility of the marble make this clock set an iconic collector's item.
