A wonderfully atmospheric 19th-century tea caddy, decorated in the richly ornamental manner associated with Victorian papier mâché and black lacquer wares. The exterior combines a deep black ground with scrolling gilt ornament and delicate shimmering floral inlay, creating a dramatic decorative surface that has developed considerable character through age.
The domed lid opens to reveal a deep green velvet-lined interior and a fitted arrangement traditionally used for storing and preparing tea. One side retains a removable cut crystal mixing bowl, beautifully faceted with geometric and starburst cutting. The adjoining compartment provides additional storage beneath its fitted cover.
The exterior decoration is particularly charming, with iridescent shell flowers and foliage set against elaborate gold scrollwork. Rather than appearing pristine, the worn gilding, softened surface and exposed areas give the piece the layered appearance collectors often seek in genuinely old decorative objects.
Originally a functional part of the ritual surrounding tea, it now makes an exceptional decorative box for a library, drawing room, drinks cabinet or collected interior. Its combination of black lacquer, glimmering shell, aged brass, velvet and crystal gives it an unmistakably romantic old-world presence.
An evocative piece of antique domestic history that works equally well as a collectible object, decorative storage piece or striking tabletop focal point. The first photo uses AI to enhance the lighting and setting. The vintage item itself is unchanged. Please see the remaining photos for its original appearance and condition.
