Billy Cain (1950-2006) an acclaimed Native American potter belonged to one of the most prestigious matrilineal dynasties in Santa Clara Pueblo pottery. He was highly regarded for blending traditional Pueblo methods with his own creative, non-traditional shapes and designs. This is an Avanyu, deeply carved Serpent pot, which he was most noted for. Cain learned the difficult art of hand-coiling, carving, and open-firing clay by watching and working directly alongside his mother and grandmother as he grew up.
I purchased this at a Santa Fe gallery in the 1980s. The original $150 price tag is still on the bottom. In great shape. Non-Smoking home.
I'm a decorator and collector who is downsizing a storage and home full of eclectic treasures. Please visit my listings and follow me so you don't miss out as I slowly go through things. Thanks
