These 19th-century English Wheel-back Windsor armchairs are exceptional examples of vernacular, country-made British furniture. Likely crafted between 1830 and 1850, these pieces showcase the distinctive engineering and multi-wood construction typical of regional workshops in the Thames Valley and Chiltern Hills.
CHARACTERISTICS: The defining feature is the central back splat pierced with a "ship's wheel" or "captain's wheel" motif. This decorative feature became highly popular during the Victorian era.
MATERIALS: The pair exhibit traditional multi-wood mixing. English makers mixed local timbers based on performance. Elm was used for the solid, single-plank shaped saddle seats because of its beautiful, interlocking grain that resists splitting when legs and spindles are wedged into it. Ash or Yew was used for the steam-bent hoop (or bow) back as well as the curved armbows, which require flexible wood that holds a curve under tension. Lastly, beech, turned on lathes by woodland craftsmen, was used to form the splayed legs, spindles and the "H-pattern" stretchers. Offer includes seat cushions, as shown.
CONSTRUCTION: True to the Windsor tradition, all vertical components, such as the back spindles and splat, as well as the lower components including the legs, pass directly into drilled sockets within the seat rather than using a continuous framing structure. The round wooden pegs visible on the seat tops indicate where the through-tenons were wedged tightly into place from above.
CONDITION: The bottom of the seats reveal heavy, rough tool markings from hand-shaping and age-darkening over more than a century. The chairs display remnants of a dark, historic finish—likely a tinted varnish or dark stain—which has worn away beautifully along the top rails, armrests, and splats from generations of human touch. This is "honest wear,” highly coveted by antique collectors because it forms a rich, irreplaceable patina.
Although the chairs vary slightly in size and height, they are classified as a matched pair rather than an identical pair. Country workshops often made these individually, and families frequently grouped slightly different sizes together for family dining or fireside use, just as you might with these.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent. Second chair dimensions: 23.75 inches x 25 inches x 40 inches; seat height 17.5 inches.
