A spectacular late 19th century French majolica jardinière, cachepot, or centerpiece planter with dramatic bronze dragon-form handles and richly modeled barbotine floral decoration. Its bold Japonisme influence, sculptural metalwork, and deep burgundy glaze give it exceptional presence on a dining table, console, sideboard, or mantel.
The earthenware bowl is finished in a mottled burgundy, brown, and cream glaze and adorned with high-relief barbotine blossoms and foliage in cream, dusty pink, ochre yellow, and sage green. Heavy cast bronze or brass mounts frame the piece with openwork detailing, scrolling accents, and imposing stylized dragon handles. The base is raised on figural mythical-beast or gargoyle-style feet, connected by openwork Chinese-key fretwork.
The ceramic body is unmarked except for an impressed or incised “1,” likely a shape or inventory number. The decoration and mounts are strongly reminiscent of fine French ceramic workshops of the period, including Keller & Guérin of Lunéville, though the piece is offered as unattributed.
