A set of seven antique Chinese famille verte porcelain plates from the late Qing dynasty, circa 1880–1890s, painted in the Kangxi revival style. Each plate centers on a peacock with its green tail fully fanned, set in a garden of flowering plants, rockwork, distant mountains and blossoming branches.
The wide border alternates floral and foliate panels with geometric bands in iron red, green, blue and soft yellow enamels. The deep greens that give famille verte its name are especially strong here, balanced by the warm iron-red border. All seven share the same design, with small variations from hand painting. The undersides are glazed and unmarked, with exposed foot rims typical of traditional Chinese manufacture.
As a matched group of seven, they make an easy wall arrangement or cabinet display with real visual impact.
NOTE: Sold as a set of seven. Mirror and accessories shown in styled photos are not included.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
These came to me as a collection, and I’ve always felt they belong together. Each plate is lovely on its own, but all seven on a wall is something else entirely.
The designer who first assembled them hung them around a rectangular mirror, and that arrangement inspired the room photos here. I can picture them framing an antique gilt mirror above a handsome chest in an entry hall, in a dining room, or in a library. They bring color, pattern and history to a room without needing much else around them.
I did think about selling them individually, but in the end I couldn’t split them up. Their real charm is in how they work together.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Famille verte (“green family”) is a Chinese enamel palette developed during the Kangxi reign (1662–1722), known for its prominent greens alongside iron red, yellow, aubergine and other colors. Late Qing decorators revived the style, reinterpreting earlier Kangxi designs. This group pairs the classic famille verte palette with a peacock in full display and intricate brocade-style borders, and finding seven closely matching antique examples together is the draw for collectors.
