This antique chest from the Netherlands displays a wonderfully sculptural profile with a gracefully shaped facade and case that houses three graduated full-sized drawers flanked within pronounced bombe side wings at each front stile. The top is distinguished by a serpentine outline with scalloped shaping along the front edge and side edges, while the drawer fronts have an undulating shape, echoing the rhythmic curves found throughout the cabinet. The drawers are fitted with period-style brass hardware, with a pair of bail pulls mounted on elaborate rococo-style backplates, and escutcheons surrounding the keyholes at center. The chest is presented on sturdy bracket-style feet. The original finish has been stripped, revealing the natural wood beneath. The chest now exhibits soft blonde to honey-toned coloration across the exterior with visible grain patterns, knots, and character marks throughout, complimented with a soft taupey-gold accent trim. The wood shows scattered age-related wear, including surface scratches, and age cracks associated with natural wood movement over time. This 19th century Dutch bombe chest, with its compact 39.5-inch width, would work particularly well as a statement piece in a foyer, living room, bedroom, or hallway. The generous drawers provide practical storage for linens, clothing, household items, or dining accessories, while the sculptural bombe form adds warmth, architectural interest, and European character to the space.
