Offered is a sterling silver Shiva Lingam "casket" pendant necklace, also known as an "Ayigalu Shivadara" from southern India. It is commonly associated with the Lingayats - a Hindu community from the State of Karnataka that worship Shiva. It was purchased during a trip to India in the 1980s.
The pendant is designed as a protective locket or shrine box intended to hold and carry a personal "Ishtalinga" (a sacred Shiva Lingam stone) close to the body. It features a spherical or domed compartment comprised of fitting halves flanked by side finials. Most surviving examples date from the late 19th C to early 20th C.
The pendant measures: 2.75" W x 1.625" D x 2.125" H
