This mid-century Italian Murano art glass vase celebrated the "Oriente" series for Vetreria Aurelino Toso, distinguished by its exuberant palette, painterly abstraction, and dramatic black and white pinwheel motif. The Oriente series was officially presented at the 1952 Venice Biennale. The free-form vessel has a broad, flattened body that gently tapers toward the base and terminates in a pinched rim. The vase is colored in blues, reds, greens, yellows, and black and white. The black and white zanfirico pinwheel is one of the most recognizable decorative devices associated with Martens' Oriente series. Signed "D. Martens" on underside of vase.
This piece would be displayed primarily as sculptural art rather than simply as a flower vase. In today's homes it would be a wonderful stand alone vase on a console, pedestal, floating shelf, or cocktail table where light can illuminate the different layers of colored glass. This vase will complement Mid-Century Modern, Contemporary, Italian Modernist, or Eclectic style interiors. See less
