This vintage lidded box is a bold exercise in optical geometry, built as a compact rectangular case covered in a mesmerizing striped inlay. Slender bands of glossy black lacquer alternate with creamy bone, laid in tight parallel rows that wrap around the sides in a stacked, brick-like rhythm. On the lid, the same stripes fold inward toward the center in mitered, nested rectangles. Where the stripes meet at the corners, they form crisp diagonal seams that create a shifting, three-dimensional illusion of depth, like a tunnel receding below the surface. The black bands are deep and smooth, with a lustrous, glass-like sheen, while the bone has a soft, ivory-white tone with faint natural variation, fine grain, and a few warmer, honey-toned strips along the side edges. The inlay is cut precisely, with narrow, even seams between pieces and sharp, clean edges throughout. The lid sits flush with the case, so the whole object reads as a single, tightly built block. The strong black-and-white contrast makes it graphic and modern, while the handcrafted inlay gives it warmth and richness.
Compact and sculptural, this box suits a coffee table, console, desk, vanity, or bookshelf, where it can hold jewelry, keepsakes, cards, or small desk items, or simply serve as a statement accent. It complements Hollywood Regency, Mid-Century Modern, Art Deco, Asian Modern, and Op Art-inspired interiors. The box measures 8.25 inches wide, 6.25 inches deep, and 3.75 inches high. Condition is very good: the lacquer and bone inlay are intact, with minor surface scratches and slight discoloration on the bone consistent with age. For care, dust with a soft dry cloth, wipe gently with a barely damp cloth, and avoid water, harsh cleaners, and direct sun, which can yellow bone.
