A mid-century electric mantel clock cut from white onyx, its soft veining lifted by vertical brass inlay and a round gold-tone face. The stepped rectangular case is pure Art Deco geometry — a quiet statement for a mantel, bookshelf, or desk. Currently in working condition. 7" T x 10.5" W x 3" D. Good vintage condition with light age wear.
Why a mantel clock? A short story.
Until the 1750s, having the time at home meant a tall, weight-driven machine — a falling weight needs room to fall, so clocks came in furniture-sized cases most families could never afford, and most households simply lived by church bells and daylight. Then French clockmakers perfected the coiled spring: power no longer came from gravity but from a wound spring, and a clock could suddenly be small, portable, and beautiful.
Where would it live? On the mantel — the shelf above the fireplace, the focal point of the room, the one surface every visitor's eye found first. The pendule de cheminée became the household's time authority and its centerpiece in one object: governing meals, work, and visiting hours with its strike, usually flanked by matching candelabra or vases in a three-piece "garniture." Through the 1800s, English and American makers carried the form into the middle-class parlor, and cases of marble, slate, and glowing stone like this white onyx became the classic wedding-gift clock of the Victorian and early-20th-century home.
The mantel is still where we put the family photographs and hang the holiday stockings. The clock is a large part of the reason it became that kind of place.
