About the Maker

Developed in the 18th century by Wedgwood, black basalt is a refined, high-fired stoneware prized for its deep matte black finish and classical aesthetic. Inspired by ancient Greek and Roman pottery, the line became a hallmark of neoclassical design, often featuring sculptural forms and applied relief decoration. Unlike jasperware, black basalt relies on its rich monochrome surface to highlight crisp, detailed modeling. It has remained a staple of Wedgwood production for over two centuries, valued for both its elegance and historical significance.

About the Piece

This neoclassical urn-form vase features a finely executed white relief frieze depicting a classical “sacrifice to Cupid” scene. At the center, a winged Cupid stands upon a pedestal or altar, flanked by draped female figures presenting offerings, symbolizing devotion and the reverence of love. The composition is enriched by classical elements such as a stylized tree and ceremonial vessels, reinforcing the ritualistic theme. The contrast between the matte black basalt body and the crisp white figures creates a striking and timeless decorative piece. See less
