19th Century Victorian Burr Walnut & Brass Campaign Writing Slope W/Fully Intact Secret Drawers
A superb, early-to-mid Victorian brass-bound campaign-style writing box or lap desk, boasting an exceptionally figured burr walnut top lid framed by double geometric ebony and brass stringing inlays. Solid brass corner protection bands wrap the edges, mimicking classic 19th-century military campaign furniture built for travel resilience.
When unfolded 180 degrees, the box reveals its original dark leather writing surface, a removable pen tray, a lidded utility compartment, and multiple stationery slots.
The Highlight Feature: Beneath the removable floor plate of the inkwell/wafer compartment sits its original, functioning 19th-century metal leaf spring mechanism. Activating the hidden lever triggers the false vertical divider to spring forward, revealing three highly coveted miniature secret drawers finished with delicate bone pulls. Designed to shield gold sovereigns, jewelry, and private correspondence from house staff, finding these mechanical secret panels fully intact and functioning is a rare treat for collectors.
The box shows honest antique patina across its secondary mixed-wood side veneers (showing characteristics of mahogany and rosewood), telling a rich story of past utility. Includes matching key with decorative tassel. Perfect as a striking desktop organizer, a jewelry chest conversion, or a centerpiece conversation piece.
Measurements with box closed are 19.75" x 10" x 7".

It shows natural aging, including a minor hairline crack in the veneer on the upper right side and a slight closing seam gap typical of seasoned timber expansion. The internal leather writing skiver shows heavy patina, creasing, and wear along the hinge line. Missing its original glass inkwell bottles. Crucially, the internal spring mechanism is completely intact and functional, releasing the secret compartment perfectly. less
