19th-Century Provençal Terracotta Biot Olive Oil Jar with Glazed Rim. (circa 1850-1890).
An exceptional 19th-century earthenware olive oil jar (jarrres de Biot) from the Provence region of Southern France. Thus roughly 135-175 years old.
Measuring approximately 23 inches tall, this classic bulbous vessel features the iconic hand-applied yellow ochre glaze around the thick, rolled rim and interior collar—a traditional technique used by French potters to prevent oil seepage.
This particular specimen is in highly desirable, unaltered pristine condition. The unglazed terracotta body displays a spectacular, time-honored natural patina with rich mineral weathering and dark coloration variance across its surface. A single owner for the last 25 years.
Notably, the base retains its original, untouched state, featuring subsequent added three drainage holes. A quintessential piece of French agricultural history, perfect as an interior focal point or a sophisticated design statement. Very heavy.
Dimensions: Approx. 20" H x 13" W.
Excellent antique condition. Robust structural integrity with honest wear, age-appropriate surface variations, and original firing characteristics. No modern modifications.
