A pair of late nineteenth-century Italian majolica dishes modelled as crisp lettuce leaves, executed in glazed earthenware with applied sculptural radish reliefs.
Rooted in the Continental trompe l'oeil ceramic tradition, these pieces reflect the naturalistic tableware produced in Naples during the late Victorian era. Each dish is moulded with organic veining and ruffled margins. Vibrant green glazes pool within the textured leaf face, fading to a pale tone along the central spine. Resting inside the channel of each dish is a fully three-dimensional radish, finished in deep plum-red with modelled green tops.
Both dishes bear impressed marks on their undersides, showing "EB Napoli" alongside an impressed "M" beneath a crown.
Condition is good. The pair exhibits a few small flea bites to the rims and minor surface marks consistent with age and earthenware production. Please inspect all photographs for complete condition details.
This set includes:
1 larger leaf dish (9.5" x 4.25" x 1.5")
1 smaller leaf dish (8.5" x 3.5" x 1")
