Substantial early 20th-century footed brass bowl with decorative ring handles, distinguished by its broad rounded body, flared rim, raised pedestal base, and handsome architectural proportions.
The vessel is crafted in solid brass with a highly polished golden exterior and a beautifully aged interior showing natural oxidation and patina acquired over decades of use. The contrast between the luminous exterior and darker interior gives the piece considerable character and reinforces its vintage presence.
Each side is fitted with an articulated brass ring handle secured by shaped riveted mounts, an attractive functional detail that also gives the bowl a distinctly traditional European character. The broad body rises from a stepped circular foot, lending the piece a balanced, almost classical silhouette.
The restrained form, visible hand-worked character of the metal, riveted hardware, and straightforward construction are consistent with Arts and Crafts and English Traditional metalwork of the early 20th century. Without a visible maker's mark, we would conservatively date the piece to approximately 1900–1920, circa 1910. The precise country of manufacture cannot be confirmed, although the design is particularly sympathetic to English and European decorative brasswork of the period.
At 17 inches in diameter, this is a generously scaled decorative vessel with numerous possible uses. It would make an impressive centerpiece on a dining or center table, a decorative cachepot or jardinière, or an elegant vessel for displaying branches or seasonal arrangements. It could also be used decoratively as a champagne or wine cooler, although because of its age and interior patina, a protective liner would be recommended for prolonged contact with moisture.
Its warm golden surface works especially well in Arts and Crafts, English Country, Mediterranean, Moorish, Traditional, Spanish Revival, and eclectic interiors, and the simple sculptural form allows it to sit comfortably alongside both antique and contemporary furnishings.
The brass exterior retains a polished finish with minor surface scratches, small irregularities, and signs of handling consistent with age. The interior displays considerably more oxidation, discoloration, and historic surface patina. These characteristics have intentionally been retained and are part of the authentic appearance of the piece.
