July (2023) is a geometric abstract textile work by German artist Meike Legler. Composed of tightly arranged colored fibers in a structured grid of rectangular forms, the work combines contrasting colors and alternating directions of the textile to create a balanced abstract composition.
Legler's practice shares formal affinities with the geometric abstraction of Sonia Delaunay and the textile explorations of Anni Albers, particularly in its use of color, pattern, and material. Her work also reflects the broader legacy of the Bauhaus, where distinctions between fine art, design, and traditional craft were reconsidered.
The textile extends around the sides of the support, allowing the work to be displayed without additional framing.
About the Artist
Meike Legler (b. 1983, Alzenau, Germany) is a contemporary German artist whose practice centers on geometric abstraction through textile-based compositions. Drawing on her background in fashion and textile design, Legler uses fabric, yarn, and other materials to explore relationships between color, form, texture, and structure.
Legler earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design from Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW) in Berlin in 2010 and also studied at Central Saint Martins in London. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2016, she began developing her fine-art practice, translating her knowledge of textiles into abstract compositions.
Her work belongs to a continuing dialogue between modernist abstraction and textile art, a history that includes the Bauhaus weaving workshops and the contributions of artists such as Anni Albers and Sonia Delaunay. Legler approaches these traditions through contemporary materials and methods, creating works that occupy the space between two-dimensional abstraction and constructed textile objects.
Legler has exhibited internationally, with solo exhibitions at Ladies' Room in Los Angeles, Annika Nuttall Gallery in Denmark, and Soho House West Hollywood. Her work has also appeared in group exhibitions in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia.
Following her years in Los Angeles, Legler relocated to Vienna, Austria.
