This pair of vintage Brighton Pavilion high-back chairs shows the Regency-inspired chinoiserie tradition at its most theatrical, rendered in warm natural rattan. Each chair rises to a tall, horseshoe-shaped crest rail that curves into the arms in one continuous sweep. A fan of slender vertical spindles radiates outward from the center. The central back panel is framed in a rectangular rattan structure and filled with sinuous, lyre-like scrollwork, tight curls, and interlaced loops, with a smaller band of looped, arched motifs below. The sides are finished with a row of fine spindles and gently arched detailing, adding rhythm and an airy openwork quality. Beneath the seat, horizontal poles are stacked in tight, parallel layers to form a sculptural apron, and a curling scroll-and-loop skirt adds a graceful flourish above the stretchers. Joints are bound with tightly wrapped cane lashing, an artisanal detail that reinforces the construction and adds tactile contrast. The honey-blonde rattan carries a warm, even patina, and small protective caps appear on the feet. The original cane seats have been replaced with wood panels.
With their commanding vertical presence, these chairs work at the head of a dining table, flanking a console in an entry, or as statement accent seating in a sunroom, bedroom, or lounge. They complement Hollywood Regency, Chinoiserie, Boho Chic, Coastal, and Mid-Century Modern interiors. Each chair measures 23.5 inches wide, 17.25 inches deep, and 41.25 inches high, with an 18-inch seat height. Condition is very good: the rattan shows minor scuffs and light wear on the legs and seat edges, and the frames are structurally sound with no visible repairs or significant damage. For care, dust regularly with a soft brush or vacuum attachment, wipe gently with a barely damp cloth, and keep away from prolonged direct sun and excess moisture. Add cushions for comfort.
